What Is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a regulated primary health care profession that focuses on prevention, root-cause assessment, and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal. Naturopathic doctors use evidence-informed therapies such as clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture, physical medicine, lifestyle counselling, and targeted supplementation.
How is naturopathic medicine different from conventional medicine?
Naturopathic and conventional medicine use similar diagnostic approaches, including thorough histories, physical exams, and laboratory testing. The difference lies primarily in treatment focus and philosophy. Naturopathic care places added emphasis on prevention, lifestyle factors, and supporting the body’s regulatory systems, while conventional medicine often prioritizes acute care, diagnosis, and pharmaceutical or procedural interventions. In many cases patients may rely on naturopathic and conventional medicine, and when combined, they are complementary and promote more comprehensive, well rounded care.
What kind of education does a Naturopathic Doctor have?
Naturopathic doctors complete a four-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical program following an undergraduate degree. This education includes biomedical sciences, clinical diagnosis, physical examination, and naturopathic therapeutics, as well as supervised clinical training. NDs must pass national board examinations and maintain ongoing continuing education to remain licensed in Alberta.
Are Naturopathic Doctors licensed in Alberta?
Naturopathic doctors in Alberta are regulated by the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta (CNDA) and must meet specific education, examination, and continuing-education requirements to practice.
Is Naturopathic care right for me if I take prescription medications?
Yes, in fact, naturopathic interventions can help prevent/correct nutritional deficiencies and side effects caused by medications, and even help make some more effective! Naturopathic doctors are trained in pharmacology, including how medications work, their common uses, and potential interactions. As part of your care, medications are reviewed carefully to ensure safety with any prescribed treatments.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
During your first appointment, we'll discuss your health history, review symptoms, lifestyle factors and relevant medical records, and establish your health goals. Together, we'll discuss a treatment plan, which may include recommendations from multiple naturopathic modalities. To make the most of your first appointment, please review the information on the "Appointments" tab.
How can naturopathic medicine support fertility?
Naturopathic medicine can support fertility by identifying and addressing factors that may be impacting ovulation, hormone balance, and overall reproductive health. This may include support for conditions such as PCOS, irregular cycles, thyroid dysfunction, or metabolic concerns. Treatment plans are individualized and may include nutrition, lifestyle strategies, and evidence-informed supplementation. Care is often provided alongside your medical team to ensure a coordinated approach.
Do I need a formal diagnosis before starting naturopathic care for fertility support?
No, many patients seek support while they are still in the early stages of trying to conceive or before beginning fertility investigations. Preconception care can help optimize cycle regularity, hormone balance, and overall health, which may improve fertility outcomes and support a healthy pregnancy.
Can you work alongside my fertility clinic/doctor?
Yes! Fertility care is most effective when it is collaborative. With your consent, I will coordinate care with your family doctor, fertility clinic, or other providers to ensure your treatment plan is safe, appropriate, and aligned with any testing or treatments you are undergoing, including ovulation induction or IVF.
What does a fertility treatment plan typically include?
Treatment plans are always individualized, but often include a combination of nutrition and lifestyle strategies and targeted supplementation. When appropriate, lab testing may be used to better understand hormone patterns, metabolic health, or other contributing factors. The goal is to support both reproductive health and the foundational aspects of health that influence fertility outcomes, while keeping your stress to a minimum.
How can naturopathic medicine help me once I'm pregnant?
Naturopathic care during pregnancy focuses on supporting both maternal health and healthy fetal development through safe, evidence-informed approaches. This can include nutrition, supplementation, homeopathy and support for common concerns like sleep, digestion, stress, mood, and fatigue. Care is always individualized and adapted to each stage of pregnancy.
Do you accept pediatric patients?
